More Light Presbyterians

Annual Report 2020

It is a massive understatement to say that 2020 was a year like no other.

Of course, the past year will be remembered through the lens of COVID-19. But for More Light Presbyterians, while COVID was the catalyst, the real opportunity in 2020 came in confronting the pre-existing pandemic of systemic racism.

In 2020, with our best laid plans upended, and life as usual stopped short, we watched with the world as injustice was laid bare in the violence against Black bodies. Not that this was new, but somehow the disruption of “normal” life cast it in starker relief. Like so many, we were left to confront who we really are, coming as we do from the pervasive culture of white supremacy that has shaped us.

At More Light, we were called to a season of deep reflection and reorientation about who we are and what we are called to do. The springboard of confrontation and reflection brought the past 5 years into sharper focus. Since the passage of marriage equality in the PC(USA), More Light has been seeking God’s direction on how to bring our experience and activism to bear in new ways.

Watch this video to make the most out of our interactive report.

As our call became clear, we felt energized, even as we faced 2020’s unique challenges. We realized that by God’s grace we had been building the skills that were needed for this moment without knowing how much we would need them. We were able to move quickly to scale our online offerings to equip, encourage, empower—and now to disrupt in the midst of disruption.

We never lost faith in the power of Church to transform lives, even when it moves online. We kept our commitments to justice, drew from our deep roots, and widened our reach.

  • Weekly Liberation Bible Study Live episodes on Facebook 20,000 listeners

  • Monthly Virtual Pulpit Supply 5,000 worshippers in 100 congregations

  • Clergy Check-Ins extended a lifeline for leaders who felt isolated and overwhelmed

  • Signature workshops and trainings on gender, sexuality, and ministry beyond the binary equipped ministers and educators to faithfully serve their communities

What came through despite distance, isolation, and exclusively digital platforms was an investment in deep relationships to encourage, equip, and empower our members to confront and transform systems of fear and scarcity perpetuated by white supremacy.

Also in 2020, MLP conducted an audit of our past, present, and hopes for the future of how we organize our work and to investigate what has been the core of our mission and what we hope to carry forward as central to our identity.

We identified three pillars under which all of our purpose and ministry can be organized.

Love Unafraid

Both by showing and modeling love, and by encouraging others to love through actions as well as feelings or words, MLP leads those it works with to face down fear and draw from the power of love to overcome it.

Justice Unbowed

In the face of relentless attempts to pervert justice as a tool against the LGBTQIA+ community, MLP has said “no” to discrimination, even when it has been “legalized.”

Continuing to stand tall and march forward, MLP projects strength that invites others to join in the fight against injustice anywhere, to paraphrase Martin Luther King, Jr., so that there may be justice everywhere.

Hope Unleashed

Controlling and constraining the freedoms of LGBTQIA+ persons is one of the great and persistent sins of the church. This practice of control persists even within “welcoming” congregations, and remains a challenge to the full inclusion that MLP is dedicated to bringing to fullness.

By giving voice and modeling leadership, MLP is breaking the chains that keep hope bound so that its true force may be felt by all.

What we’ve been up to

Virtual Pulpit Supply

Virtual Pulpit Supply allows us to connect no matter the distance, and gives congregations from Alaska to New York the opportunity to hear a good word from More Light Presbyterians. From June through December we provided virtual pulpit supply in 100 congregations, giving pastors a needed break and providing space for preachers to be heard who, in pre-pandemic times, would never have been able to travel the physical distance.

“I just ‘watched church’ and heard your powerful sermon. Thank you for opening our eyes to the many arms of justice. This is a message we need right now so much.”

Preaching and leading

This work includes preaching, leading workshops on transgender inclusion, working with youth groups, teaching Sunday school, leading worship, minutes for mission, and more.

More Light Sunday

In June 2020 we led an innovative and inspirational online worship service where nearly 500 people attended or viewed the fully prepared Pride worship service for congregations to use in their contexts.  Following More Light Sunday worship, we hosted the streaming service premier and panel conversation with the Director and featured subjects of Out of Order Documentary as it moved to a streaming platform. Over 200 people attended to watch and participate in the Q&A with Director Amanda Bluglass and  Rev. Bertram Johnson, Rev. John Russel Stanger, Rev. Mieke Vandersall, and Rev. Alex McNeill

Abolitionist Advent

For the 2020 Advent season More Light collaborated with Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship, and additional thought-partners: Rev. Lindsay Anderson, Myles Markham, Minister Candace Simpson, and Rev. Ananda Barclay to launch Abolitionist Advent. During the four weeks of Advent we invited people across traditions and mediums to explore themes of revelation, disruption, examination, and embodiment to support a larger faith movement reimagining restorative solutions to community safety, health, and wellness.

Abolition means not just the closing of prisons and ending of policing, but putting in place the vital systems of support that many communities are systematically disenfranchised from.

Throughout Advent we offered lectionary-based content to equip people of faith to define, explore, reflect and take action to further the in-breaking of abolition into this world. We offered weekly written reflections on themes of abolition and Advent, and adapted Liberation Bible Study for the month of December to become Abolitionist Advent Bible Study with special guests and themes:

Embodiment Rev. Alex Evangelista

Liberation Bible Study

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown in March of 2020, we have aired weekly episodes of a lectionary based podcast exploring themes of resistance and liberation in our Biblical texts. We went live on Facebook for over 20 episodes in 2020. Episodes reach an average of 1,000 viewers and we have received numerous positive comments of how helpful this is in preparing weary pastors to preach the Word, and offers a progressive, LGBTQIA+ inclusive perspective of love unafraid for those who have been harmed by un-affirming faith communities. Looking for past episodes? New episodes are available weekly on MLP’s Facebook page, or via the Liberation Bible Study podcast.

New churches and campus groups

In 2020, 27 communities stepped forward to claim More Light Presbyterians membership.

We are so grateful to now have 301 organizations in our community who have made a visible and sustained commitment to include, support, and affirm LGBTQIA+ people. By becoming a More Light Church, they signal a safe harbor and a vital place of faith in action. They pick up the banner under which the good work of communities for the mutual benefit of all its members may be done safely and with clarity of purpose.

Pastoral care and guidance

Throughout the long months of the pandemic, churches and individual pastors and lay leaders have turned to us as a source of inspiration, wisdom, and strength so they can continue serving their communities well.

In the past year MLP staff have held at least 175 personal conversations with teens, parents, pastors, and church members as they explore questions of identity, leadership, and expanding inclusive welcome. Furthermore, as the pandemic required the shut down of in-person worship, we put out a sign up sheet for a weekly video call for pastors to share space (that they weren’t responsible for leading), talk through challenges of worshipping virtually, and replenish their spirits. Over 65 pastors and worship leaders have participated in this group since March 2020. Some have joined us to talk through how to create the best technology set-up, others have joined us to be in a space where they can share openly about the grief they are personally experiencing while leading their communities.

Virtual Ministry In Collaboration

Released “From Ashes to Rainbows Lenten Devotional” in collaboration with Justice Unbound. The Lent devotional featured writing by LGBTQIA+ people of faith and allies with an array of voices and perspectives, thought-provoking theologies, and a new way to think about the season of Lent. The devotional reflected, challenged, and awaited the resurrection of the Christ who loves us all…no matter who God created us to be. The devotional was downloaded hundreds of times and received numerous amounts of praise like this testimony from a pastor at Portage Lake United Church in Houghton, MI who offered a printed copy at their church before COVID-19 lockdown, "The Queer Lenten Devotional this year was AMAZING.  People at my church cried when they saw it waiting in the Narthex!  They felt so loved and beloved.”

MLP partnered with NEXT Church to launch the Anti-racist Practices for Faithful Leaders Coaching Cohort. Alex joined a diverse team of 8 trained coaches, Jessica Vazquez Torres served as the cohort’s lead trainer. A record number of 48 participants joined this 6 month cohort from September 2020-February 2021 to learn, explore, and practice bringing racial justice to the core of their leadership.

MLP partnered with the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship to launch a pilot program of Action Circles, facilitated conversation groups to support participants’ education and mobilization around defunding the police and looking for alternatives to police intervention. Jess co-facilitated an Action Circle with Rev. Emily Brewer, executive director at PPF.

Jess Cook served as a team co-moderator during NEXT Church’s 2 year Racial Justice Audit in partnership with Crossroads Antiracism Organizing and Training. Jess joined a small cohort of people organized by NEXT Church to conduct an audit to analyze racial disparities within the organization and suggest interventions to the Strategy Team.

Thank you to our 2020 donors
who made our ministry possible!

From the board and staff at More Light Presbyterians, thank you for being a steadfast partner for organizations seeking to further LGBTQIA+ inclusion in our churches and in the world.

Your partnership has allowed us to increase our impact through church partnerships, creation of educational materials, online programming, and so much more as we have continued to work for the thriving of LGBTQIA+ individuals in the PC(USA) and beyond. We are ready to adapt to any challenge that comes our way, and we hope you will consider providing increased financial support this year to bolster these growing efforts.

Your support ensures that we can continue to expand and diversify our programmatic reach and community impact through offerings that meet the expressed needs of churches and faith communities as well as those of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
